Barney the Dinosaur is heading to the big screen with the help of Academy Award nominee Daniel Kaluuya.

According to Variety, actor Daniel Kaluuya and Mattel Films are teaming up to develop a live action family feature film that’ll star everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur, Barney.

Kaluuya, who nabbed an Oscar nod for his performance in Get Out, will serve as a producer on the project through his 59% banner. Meanwhile, Mattel Films will serve as a co-producer on the project alongside Valparaiso Pictures.

For Mattel, specifically, the upcoming Barney feature film marks the newest project in a long line of feature films the company has coming down the pipeline. Currently, Mattel films is also in the process of developing films based off of the popular toy brands Barbie and Hot Wheels.

In a statement announcing the project on Friday (October 18), Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner elaborated more on why Kaluuya is the perfect partner to help bring Barney to the big screen.

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” said Brenner. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

Meanwhile, Kaluuya plus his production company also weighed in, stating that everyone involved on the project is looking forward to resurrecting one of the most beloved children’s characters of all time.

“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” said Kaluuya in a statement. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

There’s currently no word on when we can expect Barney and the rest of his pals to make their way onto the big screen.
