The 1978 classic comedy Animal House is in production to become a musical, led by The Book of Mormon director and choreographer.  More information after the jump!

Universal Pictures Stage Productions announced this morning Animal House will hit theaters sometime in the near future.  The Grammy-nominated Canadian band Barenaked Ladies will compose the original score.  No dates or actors have been announced, but we will keep you posted as they are!

Tony-award winner and The Book of Mormon director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw will stage and choreograph the upcoming comedic film-turned-musical.  Michael Mitnick will write the adapted script.

Below is a brief synopsis of the film, as provided by The Hollywood Reporter:

Set in 1962, the Landis comedy chronicled the efforts of a college dean to expel the disreputable Delta fraternity from his campus for repeat conduct violations and poor grades, using the squeaky-clean Omega boys to implement his plan. But the party animals proved no easy prey, responding with a counter-attack that culminated in the sabotaging of Faber College’s annual homecoming parade.

The original movie starred the late SNL actor John Belushi, as well as Tom Hulce, Karen Allen, and Kevin Bacon. The movie grossed over $141 million.
