Only a couple weeks after wrapping up some well-earned vacation time, Barack and Michelle Obama have sold the rights to their respective post-White House memoirs to Penguin Random House.

The purchase price wasn’t announced by Penguin Random House, but reports this morning indicated the bidding war had reached $60 million (inclusive of both books), a “record sum for US presidential memoirs.”

The publisher also announced that they’ll be donating one million books “in the Obama family’s name to First Book, a longstanding Penguin Random House non-profit partner and the Washington, DC-based partner for the 2016 White House digital education initiative, Open eBooks.”

“First Book is dedicated to promoting equal access to education by providing new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need in the United States and Canada. Consistent with their past practice, the Obamas also plan to donate a significant portion of their author proceeds to charity, including the Obama Foundation.”

The publisher plans to “make each of their books global publishing events of unprecedented scope and significance.”

Release dates haven’t been set for either memoir, but we’re already eager to get in the book signing lines.

For what it’s worth: George W. Bush’s memoir was published in November 2010, close to three years after he left office. So we might be waiting a while before we see POTUS and FLOTUS 44’s books.
