Bambi is the latest childhood favorite to get the remake treatment, with Disney announcing today that it will create a photo-realistic remake of the classic.

Get your tissues ready because Disney is remaking one of its most heart-wrenching animated films in its vault: Bambi.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed today that Disney’s Bambi is the latest animated classic to receive the live-action treatment.

Or, rather, we should say ‘live action,’ as the animal-focused narrative won’t actually make use of live animals in the film, but will instead use state-of-the-art computer-generated graphics and technology to create a photo-realistic remake similar to The Lion King and The Jungle Book.

The animated film tells the story of Bambi, a young fawn who must learn his place in the world as he navigates the dangers of the forest. Along with his two close friends — a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower — Bambi comes of age as he faces the joys and tragedies (like that of losing a parent, let’s say) of growing up.

The studio has already hired Captain Marvel and Tomb Raider scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet, along with Sierra Burgess Is a Loser and Chaos Walking writer Lindsey Beer, to pen the script for the remake, which will reportedly remain true to the original story of Bambi — meaning that the studio does not intend to shoehorn in a larger or more epic narrative into the classic coming-of-age tale.

There is no word yet on who Disney will hire on to direct the film, but seeing as Disney’s last two live-action outings — Aladdin and The Lion King — had big name directors like Guy Ritchie (of Sherlock and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels fame) and Jon Favreau (of Iron Man fame) at the helm, it’s likely this remake will likewise attract top tier talent to the director’s chair.
