Sony Pictures will be releasing Bad Boys for Life for digital release earlier than expected, with the movie being made available on March 31.

The Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starring action-comedy hit will then go on to debut on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on April 21.

Bad Boys for Life was released on January 17, 2020 and is currently the highest-grossing movie of the year thus far, earning $204 million in North America and $419 million worldwide on a budget of about $90 million.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, most theatrical releases were released for digital streaming roughly 74 to 90 days after they premiered in theaters, and 88 to 90 for a physical release. However, that has changed in recent weeks, with movie studios adapting to the fact that all major movie theater chains have closed their doors per the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control.

This early release makes Bad Boys for life just one in the latest slew of films that are heading to video-on-demand streaming platforms early.

Paramount announced yesterday that it would be releasing Sonic early. Disney announced last week that it would be releasing its newest Pixar film, Onward, onto digital release a mere two weeks after it was released in theaters.

Universal was the first to announce that several of their current theatrical releases including Emma and The Invisible Man would be hitting digital on March 20, with Warner Bros. then following them by announcing that The Way Back and Birds of Prey would likewise be made available for digital streaming early.

Bad Boys for Life is the sequel film to 1995’s Bad Boys and 2003’s Bad Boys II. The film reunites original cast members Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as old-school cops taking down the leader of a Miami drug cartel.

The film received favorable reviews from both critics and audiences, netting a 77% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade cinemascore from audiences.
