The Bad Ass Women conversation returned for its second year at NerdHQ, assembling an amazing panel of fresh and returning faces to talk about industry struggles, genderbending and more.

Taking to the stage alongside moderator Zachary Levi to talk all things badass were Yvonne Strahovski, Felicia Day, Krysta Rodriguez, Bree Turner and Mercedes Mason. As they walked out to a cheering crowd, we knew that this second year was going to be just as delightfully hilarious and poignant as the first — and the ladies certainly didn’t disappoint.

Here are our five favorite moments from the panel!

Krysta Rodriguez: ‘Well, they want badass women. We just broke the law, motherfuckers.’

On their way to NerdHQ, Strahovski and Rodriguez took a golf cart to expedite the trip from the convention center. Unfortunately for them, they forgot to put on their seatbelts — which resulted in a ticket for everyone in the cart. You can’t really get more badass than that.

Felicia Day: ‘I never knew that things weren’t appropriate for gender.’

The panelists discussed the struggles of gendered marketing and how that influences people’s gender and sexuality on a daily basis. Day is more conscious of it having been homeschooled, and her parents ensured that she grew into herself naturally and loved what she wanted to love, regardless of outside influences.

Bree Turner: ‘Princesses do a lot of charity work.’

Since having a daughter, Turner has noticed how pink and sparkly merchandise for girls is — but while she’s not a fan, she doesn’t begrudge her daughter wanting to be a princess. She even encourages her, because princesses are badass too.

Mercedes Mason: ‘I love road pavers, for lack of a better word.’

When asked about women behind the camera, every member of the panel waxed poetic about female writers and directors, and everyone in between. Mason spoke passionately about supporting women who pave the way for others, in order to make the industry a better place. We admit, we got a little emotional.

Yvonne Strahovski: ‘I always think… this could totally work if you flipped it, and had it be a lead female.’

Whilst discussing scripts they’d received, Strahovski bemoaned the lack of great leading lady roles — but that the leading men would work just as well as a woman in the same part. We couldn’t have agreed more when she said that. Here’s hoping the tides will change sooner.
