Avril Lavigne is giving fans a taste of what’s to come on her first single in five years — listen to a clip from “Head Above Water” below.

Avril Lavigne took a much needed break from the spotlight while she focused on battling lyme disease, but now, the “Complicated” singer is gearing up to make a huge comeback.

Lavigne took to the internet just last week to explain her absence to fans in an emotional letter posted to her website that explains where she’s been. In it she addressed her harrowing battle with lyme disease, revealing that there was a point where she was convinced she wouldn’t survive.

“I had accepted death and I could feel my body shutting down,” wrote the singer. “I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air.”

It was during those dark times that Lavigne wrote the majority of her new music — including her forthcoming single — while she was bedridden.

Now, fans are getting their first taste of what Avril’s new music will sound like. The “Sk8er Boi” star took to Twitter to share a 30-second clip from the forthcoming single and as expected, the clip sets up an emotional ballad.

“I’ve gotta keep the calm before the storm/ I don’t want less, I don’t want more,” sings Lavigne over a piano melody. “Must bar the windows and the doors/To keep me safe, to keep me warm.”

Though Lavigne isn’t featured in the video that accompanies the clip, she did follow up by sharing some photos of herself in a flowing white dress posing along a seashore.

Unfortunately, there’s still no word on when Lavigne will drop her next full-length record, but fans won’t have to wait long for the singer’s emotional ballad to make its grand debut.

Avril Lavigne’s “Head Above Water” drops on September 19.
