Big news today from Joss Whedon. Although many fans have speculated based on the trailer that The Avengers would turn into Iron Man & Friends, it has been officially revealed today that the story will primarily come from Cap’s perspective.

No, we’re not talking about having the whole film be from Cap’s P(oint)O(f)V(iew) Cloverfield style. According to Joss Whedon, it was just the best way to lead us through the story.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly (via CBM), Whedon had this to say:

“I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.”

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, mostly since many had already speculated that The Avengers would pick up right where Captain America left off, although some already had Tony Stark pegged as the leader of the Avengers.

Whedon is quick to note however, that just because the film is mostly from Cap’s point of view doesn’t mean that he is the main character.

“[The Avengers] is very much about people who are alone — because I’m writing it.[Captain America] is kind of the ultimate loner in that way. There is an anachronism to him, and Chris and I have always tried to make it, without making it goofy or too obvious, always tried to make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.

You get them in a world, the world of S.H.I.E.L.D., where they fit in. And you say, upfront, these are monsters. These are freaks. These are not you and me, and what are they doing here? How are they human beings? Let’s just investigate that.”

So what do you think? Is “through Cap” the best way to envision an Avengers film? Would you have preferred to see Tony lead the team? The villain is Thor’s brother, so wouldn’t it make sense if the movie followed Thor’s return to Earth? Were you thinking it might be Nick Fury or Maria Hill? Did you know it would be Cap all along?
