Big battles call for big visuals call for big cameras call for big screens. Marvel announced this morning that The Avengers: Infinity War will be filmed completely in IMAX.

A press release issued Thursday offered a lot of technical lingo, but here’s the simple version of what you need to know: The Russo Brothers are going to film parts one and two of Infinity War “in their entirety” using IMAX technology and a fancy, “next generation revolution 2D digital camera” by ARRI, a movie production company.

Marvel says this is the first time a movie will be filmed completely with IMAX cameras. In addition, the Russo Brothers will be using ARRI’s IMAX camera for a few scenes in Captain America: Civil War which begins filming very soon (let’s consider the use of the cameras a warm up for their heavy use onInfinity War).

Said the Russo Brothers about today’s news, “The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring 10 years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”

Shooting entirely in IMAX will allow theatergoers to enjoy The Avengers: Infinity War in the IMAX aspect ratio in IMAX theaters; in layman’s terms, you’ll get to enjoy a taller picture in an IMAX equipped movie theater. See the example below:

We can’t wait to see Thanos taking on The Avengers in this extra large format. There isn’t enough room for Thanos and Hulk on one normal-sized theater screen!

Civil War pits Iron Man and Captain America against one another on May 6, 2016. Infinity War, Part 1 opens May 4, 2018, and Part 2 hits theaters May 3, 2019.
