Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, are set to direct The Avengers: Infinity War for Marvel.

Update (March 23, 2015): Following months of rumors, the Russo Brothers have now signed to direct parts 1 and 2 of Infinity War. The two films will be shot back-to-back in 2016.

The brothers will be busy over the next few years. As if preparing for a two-part Avengers wasn’t enough, they’ll begin shooting Captain America: Civil War in just a couple of weeks. (Via THR)

Original story (December 12, 2014): More information continues to come from the Sony hack, but now we’re getting information about other studio’s films. During an email conversation between Sony Entertainment Chairman Amy Pascal and Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the three discussed producing Sony’s new Spider-Man films.

The Russo brothers said that they had to decline, due to the fact that they will be directing Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War part 1 and 2. While this had been rumored to be the case back in October, these hacked emails seem to confirm that the two will be taking over for Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon.

When this was rumored a few months back, we were excited, as the Russos directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was seen as the best Marvel movie released in the last few years. Some say it even rivaled The Avengers in that it wasn’t just a comic book film, but a true superhero spy-thriller.

The emails also said, “A pity that negotiations with Marvel did not work,” which would seem to confirm that Marvel and Sony’s attempts at working together have failed. This means that it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing Spider-Man alongside his fellow Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, which was being talked about according to another email from Sony execs which was released via their recent hack.

Joe and Anthony Russo are currently working on Captain America: Civil War, which will have Iron Man and Cap face off in a battle of politics, which seems right up the Russo’s alley. We think they’re a great choice by Marvel after Joss Whedon decides to move on once The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier made an impressive $714 million. To say Marvel was pleased with the Russo brothers’ work is an understatement. They took one of the less popular characters, to the general public at least, and turned him into a bonafide superstar. Marvel announced they’d be back for Captain America 3 even before the second film hit theaters, further proving they have a lot of faith in the two directors.

With Robert Downey Jr. joining Civil War, its guaranteed to be a success, but it seems that the Russos may be taking over Marvel’s cinematic universe. We think they’ll do an excellent job, and now we’ll know to look at Captain America: Civil War for what we can expect to see in the two part film Avengers: Infinity War.

This film will be taking us into the war vs Thanos, who will be wielding the Infinity Gauntlet most likely and destroying worlds as the Avengers attempt to stop him. Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 will hit theaters May 4, 2018.
