Marvel has announced that actor James Spader will play Ultron in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers sequel Age of Ultron.

Ultron is the lead villain in the highly-anticipated The Avengers sequel and is scheduled for release on May 1, 2015. Whedon announced the title and lead villain at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Ultron is a creation of sorts. He was created by Dr. Henry Pym, who we will find out in November of 2015, is also Ant-Man (Marvel movie coming soon!). Pym was experimenting with sentient robots, when he succeeded a bit more than he’d hoped.

Ultron became self-aware by using Pym’s own brain waves, and while he inherited Pym’s superior intelligence, he didn’t take on any of his compassion and his brain was instantly filled with hatred for his creator. Ultron would rebuild himself multiple times, and every time he rebuilt himself, he would become stronger.

While Ultron has quite a bit of backstory already, Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon says that he won’t be going down that road. He’s decided to rewrite Ultron’s origins so that the audiences can be surprised.

The biggest guess right now is that Jarvis will be “turning evil” in Avengers: Age of Ultron and will no longer believe he needs Tony Stark to function. This is a solid guess, almost too perfect, but since Spader will be voicing him, we now know that most likely won’t be happening.

But, maybe once Jarvis turns into Ultron his voice changes, we’re still hanging on to the fact that Jarvis turning evil would be an epic route to go for Ultron’s origins. We’re very interested to see how James Spader voices the role.

Spader was most recently seen in the final season of The Office, and director Steven Spielberg’s Oscar award winning film, Lincoln.

James Spader will face off against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the villain in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the sequel to 2012’s record-breaking “Marvel’s The Avengers.” The Emmy Award-winning actor will play Ultron in the Avengers’ much anticipated return to the big screen from writer/director Joss Whedon. The film comes to theaters on May 1, 2015.

Spader earned three Emmy Awards for his role as Alan Shore on “Boston Legal” and “The Practice,” and will return to television this fall in NBC’s highly anticipated series “The Blacklist.” Most recently Spader was seen in the critically-acclaimed film “Lincoln” directed by Steven Spielberg and has previously worked with a long list of accomplished film directors including David Cronenberg, Curtis Hansen, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Tim Robbins, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Soderbergh, and Oliver Stone. David Mamet also directed Spader in the Broadway play Race.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will bring the Marvel Universe’s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains, with “Marvel’s The Avengers” director Joss Whedon returning to write and direct the sequel. “Marvel’s The Avengers” was released in 2012 and went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-largest grossing movie of all time.

Spader is represented by ICM Partners and his lawyer Melanie Cook at Ziffren Brittenham.

James Spader’s biggest movie hits came during the ’80s, where he starred in a supporting role opposite Charlie Sheen in Wall Street. He also starred alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Less Than Zero, where RDJ was a drug addict, forced to commit some heinous acts by Spader to support his drug habits.

Spader did quite a few of those stamped out films that were the cornerstone of ’80s filmmaking, but his performances were always highlighted. He later moved to television, where he will soon be seen on The Blacklist. He’s an interesting choice, but Marvel is known for pinpointing talent.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron release date is set for May 1, 2015.
