We’ve known since before The Avengers even hit theaters that director Joss Whedon never intended to “top” the grandiose and explosive nature of the original with the Avengers 2. He’s mentioned in past interviews that the only way to make a successful sequel would be to make it “more personal” and “more painful” than the original.
This holds very true to other aspects of what has become known to be the “whedonverse.” Joss specializes in those painful moments, most of which Avengers steered away from (aside from the obvious loss of a fan favorite character).
In a brand new interview with 24 Hours Vancouver (via CBM), Whedon threw another little tidbit into the information pool of what will happen in the ever-approaching Avengers 2.
“The creation of the team is not the happy ending,” says Whedon “It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper.”
This is a relief for those that were hoping that Whedon would explore the deeper and darker roots of The Avengers, and possibly include more of a lead up into the famous Civil War storyline that’s been hinted at since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For those in the audience that were hoping for more of the same that Avengers had to offer, you may be disappointed to discover that we’re in for some traditional Whedon heartbreak.
“And maybe, while I’m digging,” said Whedon, “[I can] just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”
So it’s been proven. Joss Whedon loves to torture his characters. Currently, we have very little information on how Joss plans to “twist the knife” with the sequel to the third highest grossing film of all-time, but we get the feeling that no one will be safe in Avengers 2.
We know that Thanos is scheduled to make an appearance, and we know that the big four (Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Cap) are tipped to make a return but everything beyond that is purely speculation.
