A new series of Avatar: The Last Airbender novels will expand the world of elements and magic in exciting new directions.

The first two young adult Avatar: The Last Airbender novels will focus on the legendary Avatar Kyoshi, she of the exceptionally long life and extremely large feet. The first novel, titled The Rise of Kyoshi will delve into Kyoshi’s origins, and her founding of two very disparate organizations — the valiant warriors of Kyoshi, and the Earth Kingdom’s secret police, the Dai Li.

According to Abrams Children’s Books, who will publish the Avatar: The Last Airbender novels, The Rise of Kyoshi “maps her journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice who is still feared and admired centuries after she became the Avatar.”

F.C. Yee, author of The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, will write both parts of Kyoshi’s long-untold tale. Michael Dante DiMartino, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, will consult on the story.

“Avatar Kyoshi is one of the characters fans often ask me about, so I’m excited to have the opportunity to help expand on her legend,” DiMartino says.

Andrew Smith, senior vice president of Abrams Children’s Books, says “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Michael Dante DiMartino, Nickelodeon, and critically acclaimed author F.C. Yee to add to the canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Bringing Kyoshi’s previously untold story to life in original novels will be a major pop culture event, not only for fans of the show, but also for readers hungry for a new epic YA saga.

The Rise of Kyoshi has all the hallmarks of what YA readers love,” Smith adds. “Bold storytelling set in a rich landscape with a strong heroine at the forefront!”

Sounds like a fitting addition to the Avatar world. Eager fans will have to wait until July 2019 to continue the adventure, but The Rise of Kyoshi is available for pre-order from Abrams Books now.
