Plans have grown more ambitious for Avatar’s future. James Cameron has set plans in motion for three Avatar sequels.

What’s more: The three forthcoming Avatar films will shoot back-to-back, Deadline reports. It’s a plan with ambitions as large as what Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings trilogy last decade.

Avatar 2, written by War of the Worlds’ screenwriter Josh Friedman will be released December 2016. Avatar 3, penned by Rise of Planet of The Apes’ Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, will open December 2017. Avatar 4, with Shane Salerno on script duty, will arrive December 2018.

James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time with $720 million domestically and $2 billion overseas, topping Titanic (also by Cameron).

Avatar studio 20th Century Fox is very on board with the project, telling Deadline in a statement, “We at the studio have no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of Avatar. The growing breadth and scale of Jim Cameron’s plans for his magnificent fantasy worlds continue to amaze us all.”

This longterm plan for Avatar may leave some to wonder what could Cameron possibly have in store for a whopping three additional films, but the good news is that there’s now finally a firm plan in place for how to move forward. Having different screenwriters working on each film – but collaborating so their stories mesh well together – will allow each script to be developed simultaneously. The screenwriters also have the advantage of having a clear plan forward and can write towards particular beginnings and endings.

Thanks, Deadline.
