Though things have felt slow-moving concerning the development of James Cameron’s Avatar sequel, today we’re hearing that the film has cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as the villain.

Update: Fox has announced that this rumor is entirely false. They released a statement which says Arnold “will not be in the sci-fi sequel, nor is the actor being considered for any role.”

The news came down from Latino Review, who in recent weeks has accurately called other major casting announcements including Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Cameron and Schwarzenegger are not strangers to one another. The Avatar director wrote the three Terminator films and is also attached to the franchise’s 2015 movie simply titled Terminator.

In January, Schwarzenegger spoke to MTV about his collaborations with Cameron and working with him in the future. “Movie-wise, he’s tied up with his next two movies, but hopefully, there’s something down the line when he’s finished with that,” he said. “I always look forward to working with him because Cameron is a very talented director.”

Over the summer, we learned that Cameron has plans for three new Avatar movies, and each one is being penned by a different team of writers so that they can all be under development at once. Avatar 2 will be written by War of the Worlds screenwriter Josh Friedman for release December 2016. Avatar 3, penned by Rise of Planet of The Apes’ Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, will open December 2017. Avatar 4 with Shane Salerno on the script will arrive December 2018.

Since this news isn’t confirmed and Latino Review isn’t always accurate, we’ll be sure to follow up on this casting announcement once more official information comes in.
