Ava DuVernay is set to direct a new pilot for HBO Max called DMZ which is a futuristic drama set during an American civil war.

Ava DuVernay signed on to a new project for HBO Max. The new streamer has ordered a pilot for a new show called DMZ, a show based on a comic book series of the same name that is set in the near future during a civil war in America.

As Variety reports, DuVernay’s new show will be produced by Roberto Patino, and the Warner Bros. pilot is set to begin shooting in the early part of 2020. At this point, there isn’t any word on casting.

For those unfamiliar with the Brian Wood-penned comic, DMZ is set in the near future after Manhattan becomes a demilitarized zone (DMZ) in the wake of a civil war in the country. This leaves the area destroyed and quite isolated from the rest of the world.

Ava DuVernay will follow the life of a female medic on DMZ as she searches for her missing son in the demilitarized zone. As she searches, she saves the lives of many of the people struggling to survive in the harsh environment, standing off against gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords in the lawless environment.

This new project comes from the huge deal that DuVernay signed with WBTV back in November of 2018. The multi-year deal stated that she would develop and produce new projects exclusively under the Warner Bros. umbrella.

Ava DuVernay has certainly proven that she can bring audiences a wide range of amazing television and movies. Her most recent project was the groundbreaking limited series When They See Us, a poignant drama based on real events that took home 2 Emmys, but the visionary director is also set to helm another comic book adaptation, directing the DC Comics feature New Gods.

We can’t wait to see how her directorial eye will bring DMZ to life. The comics are certainly thrilling and tough to put down, and we are so ready to see how she adapts that engaging story for the big screen.
