What is your most recent work and why  were you inspired to write it?

My most recent book is Take a Bow.

I am obsessed with music and grew up playing piano, clarinet, and drums. Always wanted to go to a performing arts high school but there wasn’t one in my home town. I blame Fame and Grease because I really did think people danced in the cafeteria in high school and was very disappointed to find out they didn’t. So I decided to set a book at a performing arts school because I couldn’t go to one, so I thought I would pretend to be four students at one.

What was easier to write, the first line or the last line? And if you can quote it!

First line: “My life has always been one big audition.” It is from the point of view of Carter, who grew up as a child actor. It is very funny that line came kind of easy because when we were talking about the title my editor David Levithan suggested audition, so I had that in my head even though I didn’t want that to be the title. I never actually know what my last line is going to be until I actually get to the end. My last line always kind of surprises me when I get to the end and then that’s when you kind of know you’re done. This book is probably the easiest book I’ve written just because I’ve been thinking about it so much and I love music.

What is one YA book that is out now that you wish was out when you were a teen?

It’s hard to answer because when I was a teen there weren’t a lot of young adult books, so I read the Sweet Valley High series which I loved, but in the series they are blond hair, blue eyes, and a perfect size six. I do not have blond hair, blue eyes, and I have never been a size six. So I do like that there is diversity now in YA of people with all different kind of issues and families. I grew up thinking that what Liz and Jessica had was what I should aspire to.

I will say, just because I read it yesterday, Keep Holding On by Susan Colasanti. It is about bullying and I do think that is a huge thing now. I do think that it would be important for when I was younger. I would never admit things when I was younger because I was too embarrassed. Now I’m like, I‘ve seen New Kids on the Block three times as an adult, so what, Joey McEntire call me.  I think you get so afraid of not celebrating your differences when you’re a teenager because you want to fit in. I read that book yesterday. I think it is really important.
