A new trailer forAssassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag has been released, while Tomb Raider publisher Square Enix posts worrying financial results and developers of The Witcher release a toolkit for modders.

The Assassin’s Creed 4 trailer tells us about the world that protagonist, assassin and pirate Edward Kenway lives in. Once again, Ubisoft appears to be aiming for historical accuracy in the latest title in their ever-popular franchise. Whilst there is little gameplay footage in the trailer, it sets the tone of the game well, and there’s some gorgeous art on show.

We had our first cinematic trailer and gameplay trailer for Black Flag back in March. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag releases on October 29 in North America, and November 1 in Europe, on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and next gen consoles as they launch.

In other news, Square Enix, publisher of Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy and Sleeping Dogs, has announced a huge operating loss. For the year up to March 31, 2013, the Japanese company saw an operating loss of over 6 billion yen ($59.8 million). To try to reverse their fortunes, Square Enix hopes to better target their games in certain regions whilst overhauling large-scale development and turning their attention to the growing mobile market.

The Witcher 2 developers CD Projekt Red have released REDKit, a set of development tools that allows users to create mods for The Witcher 2 or even create their own RPG. The toolbox, which is now in open beta and available for all to download, aims to be accessible to both novice and experienced modders. Landscapes, quests and NPCs can all be created, and of course, shared with millions of other gamers.

The trailer below gives a very brief look at what can be achieved with REDKit. Naturally, it’s NSFW.

REDKit is available to download here.
