This week’s artist’s spotlight focuses on Megan Jessup, whose How to Train Your Dragon art will capture your imagination.

The Artist’s Spotlight is a Hypable weekly feature that will focus on someone who has caught our attention for fandom-related art, whether it be drawings, songs, crafts, or more! Every week you can expect a new talented artist we think you should be aware of!

Megan draws incredibly colorful and life-like artwork, and some of her best illustrations are character portraits from How to Train Your Dragon, which have an emphasis on the twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut.

Hypable: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Megan: I’m a girl from Canada following her dreams to become a professional illustrator.

What first interested you in art?

Disney movies. I was in love with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty when I was really little.

What are some of your favorite characters to draw?

Derek Hale/Tyler Hoechlin, the dwarves from The Hobbit, Ruffnut and Tuffnut (HTTYD), sexy men, wolves, my characters.

What’s the biggest challenge you face when you create some of your work?

Focus and not psyching myself out before I start. I’m a little bit of a daydreamer and I get distracted easily.

“I pull inspiration from everywhere. I can’t nail it down to just one thing.”

What is one aspect of art you wish you were better at?

Backgrounds. I struggle with backgrounds and perspective all the time.

What’s your favorite medium?

Watercolor.

What inspires you the most when you’re looking to create something?

Anything and everything. Interviews, fanfics, so many other artists, movies. I pull inspiration from everywhere. I can’t nail it down to just one thing.

“Draw everyday, always stay positive when receiving criticism from professionals or teachers (they are only trying to help), and accept you will have bad drawing days.”

Which artists have influenced your style?

Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, J Scott Campbell, Terry Dodson, Terry Moore, Juanjo Guarnido and so many others.

What advice would you give to other artists?

Draw everyday, always stay positive when receiving criticism from professionals or teachers (they are only trying to help), and accept you will have bad drawing days. We all get them, so don’t worry about it.

What’s your ultimate goal as an artist?

Be paid for my work and make people happy.

You can find Megan and her amazing art on Instagram and Twitter.

On Tumblr, she has a general account and one dedicated solely to Teen Wolf.

You can also find Meg and her art on her blog or her DeviantART account.

She has far more than just How to Train Your Dragon pieces, too! We particularly love her Merida portrait, and all of her Teen Wolf and superhero sketches.
