This week’s artist’s spotlight features Artist Abe, who mashes up different fandoms to make cool and hilarious crossover art.

The Artist’s Spotlight is a Hypable weekly feature that will focus on someone who has caught our attention for fandom-related art, whether it be drawings, songs, crafts, or more! Every week you can expect a new talented artist we think you should be aware of!

Hypable: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Abe: Let’s see… well, I have an unhealthy addiction to freshly baked cookies. It’s a bit on the same level as my Batman addiction. Other than that I’m also an artist that dabbles in storyboarding for various forms from video games and film.

What first interested you in art?

My brothers were a huge part of inspiring me to draw. On top of their MAD magazine and comic book collection, they also knew how to doodle. Sure, we had a Nintendo, but their drawings captivated me even more.

How would you describe your style?

I think (or hope) it would be an animated looking style. Very cartoony and not taking itself seriously at all.

What inspired you to come up with Mother Knows Best?

Heheh. My sister was going to the midnight screening of one of the Hunger Games movies. She asked if I wanted to go, but I declined. So while she was watching the movie I decided to just draw something that referenced that franchise along with one of my favorite characters, Rapunzel. :)

You do some great crossover pieces. What makes them so fun for you?

Thank you kindly! It’s just seeing what would happen if you mix two things that normally wouldn’t be together and actually making it work. The crossovers I do are from things that I enjoy and a fan of so it has a personal connection to the piece that shows.

Harley Quinn features heavily in your work. What is it that makes her so interesting?

She is just a barrel of fun! From her look to her personality, she makes it such treat to draw her. I’m a fan of humor and I don’t often draw darker themed pieces so it just makes sense that I gravitate to her like soooo many do.

If you had to pick one print that was your crowning glory, what would it be?

Oooooh… that’s a toughy. I don’t like to toot my own horn, but I’d have to say it would be This Love is Madness with Joker walking in on Harley. I enjoy telling stories as much as I can and with this piece I think I was able to tell one with the facial expressions and details.

Your Leonard Nimoy tribute is beautiful. What did he mean to you?

Thank youuu! I didn’t know much about Leonard Nimoy, but I did know his character he portrayed, Spock. I grew up with this Vulcan and how socially different he was. It was always a treat to see the crazy crossovers they did in the comic just to see what his responses would be. Spock, like many of my favorite fictional characters, represented the reach of your imagination. Just the fact that he was from another world and had pointy eyebrows stimulated that creative part of me. You lived long and prospered, sir!

What advice would you give to other artists?

Work hard on your craft and challenge yourself to be better. Build a strong foundation of general and basic artistic skills before just jumping into a style. Many young artists now are just copying other artists pieces then calling them their own. This is art. You can create whatever you want. So get to it. :)

What’s your ultimate goal as an artist?

Hmmm… it would be nice to have something named after me, like a constellation or a theme park, but for now I think I’ll settle for my art lasting longer than me for many other generations to continue to appreciate it.
