Disney’s upcoming adaptation of Artemis Fowl has finally found a young star to step into the role of the titular character!

In an announcement made via press release on Wednesday (December 20), Disney revealed that after an extensive casting call, they’d finally settled on a young actor to star in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming big screen adaptation of Artemis Fowl.

Branagh, who seems to have been heavily involved in the casting project, has officially chosen Irish newcomer Ferdia Shaw to play the 12-year-old genius. As part of the announcement, Disney revealed that casting director Lucy Bevan saw over 1200 candidates before she and Branagh settled on Shaw.

The upcoming action adventure film will mark the young Irish actor’s big screen debut, where he’ll be starring opposite Beauty and the Beast and Murder on the Orient Express star, Josh Gad. For his part, Gad has been tapped to play Mulch Diggers.

As fans of the book series will know, Mulch Diggers is a kleptomaniac dwarf who works for the fairies, although he’s also always out for his own best interest.

Gad isn’t the only big name star who will be starring in Disney’s upcoming adaptation of Artemis Fowl. Judi Dench will play the leader of the fairy police force, Commander Root, Lara McDonnell will play the elf hero Captain Holly Short, and Ender’s Game alumn Nonso Anozie will be stepping into the role of Artemis’ bodyguard, Butler.

Based on the children’s book by Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl tells the story of a 12-year-old genius who comes from a long line of criminal masterminds, and eventually finds himself in a battle against a powerful, hidden race of fairies.— the same fairies who may be the ones behind his father’s disappearance.

Disney’s Artemis Fowl is set to be release in theaters on August 9, 2019, with production on the film set to begin early next year in the U.K.
