The CW has released promotional stills from the Arrow season 4 premiere, titled “Green Arrow.”

Update (September 17): The CW has released the official synopsis for Arrow season 4, episode 1, “Green Arrow.” It reads:

“MY NAME IS THE GREEN ARROW — Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) blissful getaway is cut short when Thea (Willa Holland) and Laurel (Katie Cassidy) pay them a visit and tell Oliver they need his help back in Star City. The city has been attacked by ‘Ghosts,’ assassins led by a dangerous man named Damien Darhk (guest star Neil McDonough). However, when Oliver returns, Diggle (David Ramsey) makes it very clear that he doesn’t want Oliver on the team. Thor Freudenthal directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Beth Schwartz and teleplay by Marc Guggenheim & Wendy Mericle (#401).”

Original story (September 16): Arrow season 4 is set to pick up several months after the end of season 3, in which Oliver defeated Ra’s al Ghul and drove off into the sunset with Felicity, leaving Starling City in the capable hands of Laurel, Thea, and Diggle. However, when Arrow season 4 picks up, we’ll find Thea and Laurel paying the happy couple a visit to ask for help against a well-organized foe in the newly-branded Star City.

Arrow season 4, as evidenced by the title of the premiere, is set to transition Oliver from The Arrow to the Green Arrow. This will include both his hero moniker and his costume, which can be seen in the photos below.

After the darkness that permeated seasons 2 and 3, season 4 will be taking a lighter approach. With season 4, “Our goal was to return the show more in the tone of the first season-and-a-half,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says.

“It still feels like Arrow, but at the same time, Oliver’s got a new outlook on life,” Guggenheim explains. “We’re driving conflict to the show in ways that we never would have in the first three years. So it still feels like Arrow, but it’s a different take on the show.”

Arrow season 4, episode 1, “Green Arrow,” airs Wednesday, October 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
