Arrow season 3 began with the mystery of Sara Lance’s murder. Eventually it was revealed that Malcolm Merlyn, by proxy of Thea, was responsible. He knew Nyssa would demand vengeance for her beloved, so he intended for Oliver to protect Thea by facing Ra’s al Ghul in combat. He expected Oliver to kill Ra’s, which would also free Malcolm of the price on his head. However, this backfired when Oliver was defeated.

Oliver, though, survived, which triggered a League of Assassins’ prophecy that stated that the one who survived Ra’s’ blade would become the next Ra’s. When Oliver initially refused to join the League, Ra’s took matters into his own hands and fatally stabbed Thea; Oliver would be permitted to save Thea with the Lazarus Pit if he agreed to join the League.

Oliver went undercover in the League, but when Ra’s intended to destroy Starling City, and Oliver was forced to reveal his true nature. This led to Oliver and Ra’s facing off in combat while Laurel, Diggle, Thea and Nyssa protected the people of the city. When Oliver killed Ra’s, he took the rings of the Demon’s Head and passed them on to Malcolm Merlyn. Oliver then retired from superhero-ing and drove off into the sunset with Felicity.
