Arrow season 4 premieres Wednesday, October 7. Before that, though, we have a refresher of what happened in season 3!

Arrow season 3 began with a murder and ended with a ride into the sunset. A lot happened in between those moments, and we look at five plot points worth remembering before the start of season 4.

The mystery of Sara’s murder

The season 3 premiere ended with Sara confronted by a mysterious figure, shot in the chest with arrows, and knocked off a roof. Laurel found her sister’s body, and the hunt for the Canary’s murderer was on, as Team Arrow vowed to bring their friend’s murderer to justice.

The perpetrator turned out to be Malcolm Merlyn, by proxy. He drugged Thea and had her do the deed, though Thea had no memory of the night. Merlyn knew Nyssa would demand the blood of her beloved’s murderer and intended for Oliver to fight Ra’s in Thea’s place and defeat him, thus freeing Merlyn from the bounty on his head. Of course, this backfired as Ra’s defeated Oliver in the mid-season finale.

Things also turned out unfairly well for Merlyn, as he ended the season as the new Ra’s al Ghul.

The Demon’s Head and the Lazarus Pit

Speaking of Ra’s al Ghul, season 3 introduced the Demon’s Head himself. He defeated Oliver in combat, but Oliver’s survival triggered a League of Assassin’s prophecy that stated that the one who survives the sword of Ra’s al Ghul shall become the next Ra’s al Ghul.

Oliver refused the offer, so Ra’s fatally stabbed Thea. Oliver would only be allowed to revive her via the Lazarus Pit if he promised to join the League as Ra’s’ protege. Oliver naturally agreed. Thea was dunked in the Pit and came out in a flurry of violence, though after a short bout of amnesia, she seemed to recover quite well.

Oliver eventually killed Ra’s al Ghul and accepted the ring of the Demon’s Head, which he passed on to Merlyn.

The rise of the Black Canary

In the wake of Sara’s death, Laurel began training with Ted “Wildcat” Grant to channel her anger and grief. Eventually, however, training wasn’t enough. In honor of her sister, Laurel suited up and took on the mantle of the Black Canary.

She had a bumpy ride coming into her own as a vigilante since her training was lacking compared to the other members of Team Arrow, but she never gave up and was a full-fledged member of the team by the end of season 3.

The introduction of Ray Palmer/The Atom

Season 3 also introduced Ray Palmer, a wealthy businessman whose fiancée was murdered during the Mirakuru soldier invasion. Hoping to design a suit that would help him take to the streets to protect innocents as he couldn’t protect his fiancée, he spent much of the season working on the Atom suit, a powerful exosuit he hoped to eventually make shrink.

He and Felicity also dated for part of the season, and before the season closed, he’d signed Palmer Technologies — formerly Queen Consolidated — over to her.

The death of the Arrow and Roy’s departure

After Oliver turned himself in to SCPD for being the Arrow, Team Arrow concocted a plot to free him. Roy dressed as the Arrow and gave himself up, thus freeing Oliver from all charges. The team then faked Roy’s death in prison, so the world believed the Arrow to be dead. Roy, still alive, then left Starling City for a fresh start, though he did leave Thea his Arsenal costume.

Bonus: Olicity drives off into the sunset

In the final moments of season 3, Oliver, realizing he could no longer be the Arrow, retired from superhero-ing. Leaving the safety of Starling City in the capable hands of Diggle, Laurel, and Thea, he and Felicity drove off into the sunset in search of a future together.

Arrow season 3 premieres Wednesday, October 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
