Arrow‘s third season is starting to take shape as the show has cast a new recurring character.

We previously reported that Arrow had put out casting calls for four potentially recurring characters for the new season. Now, it seems one of those characters has been cast.

Devon Aoki has been cast as Tatsu Yamashiro, alias Katana, reports Deadline. Katana, a character comic book fans are sure to recognize, is described as a deadly sword-wielding Japanese martial arts expert.

Where will Katana fit in? Remember that Arrow‘s second season closed with the sinking of the freighter. When Oliver came to, he found himself face-to-face with Amanda Waller — in Hong Kong.

With that in mind, Tatsu will appear in the Hong Kong flashbacks as one of Oliver’s mentors. She will be a “critical influence” on Oliver’s journey to becoming the Arrow. Will we see her in the present day? No word yet, but anything is possible.

We’re guessing that Tatsu is the actual name of Akiko from the initial casting notice:

The final role is that of Akiko, Toshi’s wife and “another of Oliver’s Hong Kong caretakers.” Like her husband, Akiko “is herself highly skilled in martial arts.”

This is described as a major recurring role.

In the comics, Tatsu wields a magic sword named “Soultaker” that has the ability to take the souls of those it kills and store them inside it. With Arrow being a more grounded series, it’s not likely we’ll see magic, so it will be interesting to see the show’s take on the character.

Aoki’s film credits include 2 Fast 2 Furious, Sin City, DOA: Dead or Alive, and War.

Arrow season 3 premieres Wednesday, October 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
