Arrested Development season 5 is gearing up for production! Mitch Hurwitz revealed at Netflix’s Television Critics Association presentation on Wednesday that the show is getting ready to make a comeback.

Hurwitz appeared at the TCAs to discuss Netflix’s current slate of comedies, and the first question posed to the panel was about Arrested Development, which Netflix snapped up a few years ago following its cancellation on FOX in 2006. The most recent season premiered exclusively on Netflix in 2013.

“If it does happen, it looks like the shooting will start at the beginning of 2017,” Hurwitz told journalists, adding that storylines for Arrested Development season 5 are already in development. “It’s the thing I’m really desperate to do. We’ve got a lot of the stories broke and we’re ready to go.”

Arrested Development season 4 was noticeably different, structurally speaking, from previous seasons due to much of the cast never appearing together in the same scenes (and when they did, they were sometimes digitally merged with one another). It’ll be interesting to see if season 5 has to take a similar approach due to the busy schedules of the various cast members, many of whom are tied up with other TV projects.

As the reaction to season 4 showed, most viewers are hoping that the cast can shoot scenes together to bring us back to the Arrested Development seasons 1-3 glory days.

Today’s news is by far the most exciting update on season 5 to date because previous comments from Hurwitz lacked a filming time frame. If the show begins filming in early 2017, it could possibly be ready for binging by the end of 2017 or early 2018.
