DCEU films have always had a tumultuous relationship with the box office, but Aquaman just reached a huge box office milestone.

When it comes to box office performance, movies in the DCEU didn’t always live up to expectations. And while DC fans have proven quite loyal, it seemed the comic book giant was still struggling to find its feet. However, after winning over fans with Wonder Woman, the DCEU just earned another massive hit with the James Wan-directed movie, Aquaman.

Starring Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, the movie has been a huge hit among comic book fans across the spectrum and just hit over $1 billion in global ticket sales. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s the first time a DC film has reached that benchmark since 2012’s The Dark Knight.

Since the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy finished, DC has struggled to match the ticket sales of Marvel superhero movies. Aquaman is the ninth (tenth if you include Incredibles 2) to earn over $1 billion in global ticket sales, with 6 of those titles coming from Marvel–Avengers: Infinity War, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Black Panther, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War.

The other recent DCEU films that have come close to matching Aquaman’s box office performance are Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, coming in at $873.6 million and Wonder Woman with $821.8 million in global ticket sales. While Aquaman won’t likely surpass Wonder Woman’s domestic ticket sales of $421 million in North America, the movie’s performance is still highly impressive.

Wan responded to Aquaman’s success in a heartfelt statement, saying, “Firstly, massive LOVE and THANK YOU to the fans and audiences around the world. I’ll forever be indebted to Jason for turning Aquaman into one of the coolest, cinematic superheroes ever, and becoming the gold standard for this character for generations to come.”

We’re excited that audiences across the globe have responded so positively to the film, and we can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for us in future Aquaman adventures.
