Even though Aquaman is still in pre-production, fans are dying to find out more information on the film and director James Wan is starting to tease about the world and its villains!

Fans still have to wait about two years before Aquaman will hit the big screen in his own solo film. That doesn’t mean that fans are any less excited for it, however. Part of the reason everyone seems to be on the edge of their seats it how completely new the film will be, even amongst the genre of superhero films.

Director James Wan agrees that the new world is what drew him to the project. “That’s what I’ll speak to — the uniqueness of the Aquaman world. There are so many superhero movies now; I don’t want to make a superhero movie now for the sake of doing it,” Wan told Cinema Blend.

Wan also went on to explain that the reason a film about Aquaman hadn’t been made before was because of a lack of technology. “Technology has never allowed us to tackle something this complicated,” said Wan. “So because of that it feels like something different, and that uniqueness is what I’m excited about.”

He also give a small tease about the villains, saying, “One thing I love about the Aquaman world is all the really different, really interesting characters. They are interesting characters, including the villains — I’m not going to tell you which villains I’m going to play with! But they’re super cool. They’re very larger than life, but they’re unique.”

The director also revealed that he’s excited to work with Geoff Johns on the project. According to Wan, they will be working closely together to make sure the story is told right. It also sounds like they will be pulling inspiration from the re-envisioning of DC comics, The New 52. We can’t wait to find out more as the project draws closer to production!
