Today Apple has announced a smaller version of its hugely successful iPad: the iPad mini. And that isn’t all.

Streaming the event live to the world from the California Theater in San Jose, California, Apple announced a long-rumored miniature version of the iPad known as the iPad mini. The company also announced new MacBooks, Mac Minis, and iMacs.

The iPad (4th generation):

  • Same 10-hour battery life
  • FaceTime front side camera now HD (720p)
  • Expanded LTE (better and faster data)
  • 2x faster Wi-Fi
  • Lightning connector like new iPhones/iPod touch
     
    iPad mini:
  • You can hold it in one hand
  • It’s an entirely new design with aluminum/glass enclosure similar to iPhone 5
  • “Beautiful from every angle. Incredibly thin and light.”
  • 7.2mm thin (23% thinner than 4th gen iPad – as thin as a pencil)
  • .68 lbs (as light as a pad of paper)
  • Available in black and white
  • 7.9 inches diagonally
  • Not retina display
  • WiFi models (16GB – $329, 32GB – $429, 64GB – $529)
  • WiFi + cellular models (16GB – $459, 32GB – $559, 64GB – $659)
  • WiFi model ships November 2, Wifi+data ships November 16. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 26.

    In addition to the product reveal, Apple announced that it sold more than 5 million iPhone 5’s in the first weekend. It was the most phones sold in an opening weekend ever. 200 million devices are now running iOS 6. 300 billion iMessages have been sent since the launch of the feature with iOS 5, and 28,000 iMessages are sent per second.
