Apple’s September 2013 event at their Cupertino headquarters welcomed the introduction of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

As expected, the highlight of the Tuesday event were the two new iPhones. It is the first year that Apple has released two iPhones in one year.

For the first time Apple is replacing the iPhone 5 entirely with two new phones. Typically, Apple would lower the price of last year’s phone when introducing a new phone.

iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5C will be available in green, white, blue, pink, and yellow and is housed in a plastic container. Considered a more affordable iPhone, the 5C boasts a new FaceTime HD camera, 8MP iSight camera, the same A6 processor used in the iPhone 5, and an “improved battery.”

The phone will cost $99 for the 16 GB model and $199 for the 32 GB model. Both prices are with a 2-year contract. It does not include the fingerprint sensor that the iPhone 5S boasts.

As seen below, wallpapers built into iOS 7 will match the color of your iPhone 5C.

Cases for the phones, priced at $29, have vibrant colors and holes on the back so you can see your phone’s actual color. See below:

iPhone 5S

The new, pricier iPhone is available in three colors: Silver, gold, and “space gray.” The phone boasts major technical improvements including the A7 processor with a 64-bit chip, making it the world’s only smartphone with that powerful of an inside. iOS 7 has been designed to run on the 64-bit A7 processor, offering a CPU performance upgrade that’s 40x faster than the iPhone 5. The speed improvements will mostly be noticed in games.

A new processor was introduced alongside the A7: the M7. This processor will be able to better track your movements in every way. The iPhone will know when you’re stationary, walking, driving, and more. Developers will be able to take advantage of this processor in their apps, and Nike will introduce a program called “Nike+ Move”

As for battery, the iPhone 5S has 250 hours of standby time, which Apple claims is better than the iPhone 5.

The camera has been vastly improved as well. The new lens is a “five-element Apple-designed” lense with bigger pixels, which Apple says makes better pictures. The camera will take five pictures at a time and select the sharpest one, offering you the clearest photo (and not displaying/saving the other four). A new flash is included with two LEDs. One is cool and white while the other is warm and amber. Apple demo’d the new flash and proved that skin tones look a lot better.

That’s not all. The camera also now has a burst mode in which it takes 10 pictures in one second. It will then analyze the photos and let you pick which photo turned out the best. A slo-mo mode shoots at 120 fps at 720p. Slow motion video can be mixed in with real-time video so you only slow down a selection of your video. Apple used a video of someone diving into a pool as a demo of the feature.

Finally, Apple announced Touch ID, a feature which allows you to use your fingerprint to unlock your phone. Located on the home button, Touch ID scans your sub-epidermal skin layers and can read your thumb at any orientation. A detection ring around the home button senses your thumb to turn on the sensor. Touch ID allows you to “simply touch your home button to unlock your phone.”

Touch ID can also be used for authenticating your iTunes password. The iPhone can store multiple thumb prints so multiple users can have access.

With a two-year contract, the iPhone 5S is priced at $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64 GB.

Ordering iPhone 5C, 5S

iPhone 5C will be available for pre-order beginning Friday, September 13. The iPhone 5S will not be available for pre-orders. Both go on sale Friday, September 20.

iWork

With new iOS devices, iPhone, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote – Apple’s suite of creative software – are now all free. You will be prompted to download them for free upon activating your new device.

iOS 7

Though previously announced, Apple reiterated the new features of their forthcoming operating system.

A couple of additional iOS 7 features were announced today: New ringtones are coming and system alert sounds have been improved.

iOS 7 will be released Wednesday, September 18 and is a free download. It will be available for iPhone 4 and above, iPad 2 and above, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5th generation and above.

No mention: Apple’s iWatch, Apple TV

As expected, Apple did not share new information about their rumored iWatch and Apple TV upgrades. The two tech categories will likely be unveiled at a later time. No rumors indicate that an iWatch or revamped Apple TV event are coming in the near future, as the tech giant is still developing the products so that they have something consumers will be really tempted to purchase.

Apple used the start of their event to share details about the iTunes Festival, Apple retail stores, and the previously announced iOS 7. Their yearly music event has been streamed live to over 100 countries via Apple devices like the Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad.
