Marvel’s Ant-Man film officially began production yesterday and today we have the first look at Paul Rudd as the film’s superhero.

While he’s not Ant-Man just yet, we’re getting our first look at actor Paul Rudd as the film’s main character Scott Lang. Check out the first official image from Ant-Man below (via USA Today):

In a new interview with USA Today, Paul Rudd says, “The way technology has advanced just in the last few years, picturing this world, what they can do with this kind of story line and character, I thought this could be something that could be very strange and hasn’t been seen before.”

He continued as he discussed going to this year’s Comic-Con, saying, “I was really excited about being a part of something like that.”

As for the image it certainly looks a bit more dark and ominous than we imagined with director Peyton Reed helming the project. He replaced Edgar Wright just two months ago and looks like he’s off to a great start.

Rudd’s character is an ex-con and thief who ends up finding a mentor in Dr. Hank Pym, who is played by Michael Douglas, a genius inventor of technology that allows him to shrink down to the size of an insect and increases the person’s strength.

Pym ends up handing the technology down to Scott Lang (Rudd) and that’s when he becomes the pint-sized superhero. Rudd and Douglas will then work together to plan a heist that “if successful will save the world.”

We’ll be curious to see how Marvel and Reed promote Ant-Man, as it’s somewhat of a different film than Marvel’s latest releases. But with Guardians of the Galaxy coming out of nowhere and just crossing over $400 million worldwide, the studio is probably feeling pretty comfortable.

We look forward to seeing more of Ant-Man as it continues production, which began yesterday, and let us know what you think of our first look at Paul Rudd as Ant-Man/Scott Lang.

Ant-Man will hit theaters July 17, 2015.
