A note to media interviewing Ansel Elgort this month: Don’t ask him about playing Shailene Woodley’s love interest and brother. He’s tired of that question.

A brief recap: When Ansel was cast as Hazel’s love interest Gus in The Fault in Our Stars, people immediately assumed it’d be creepy to watch Ansel and Shailene go from playing brother and sister in Divergent to cutesy-awkward sex partners in Fault. The question was being posed to both actors non-stop during the press tours of both films.

In hindsight it wasn’t weird at all, but the questions about switching between brother and romantic interest are continuing to come up as we enter the Insurgent press tour.

Hypable was at a press conference for the Divergent sequel this morning when Elgort was asked the question. As the words were leaving the reporter’s mouth, Ansel stood up and gave a slow clap while she finished her goofy inquiry. Here’s how it went down:

Reporter: “Was it weird going from brother and sister with Shailene, and then making out with Shailene [clap], and then [clap] going back [clap] to being… [clap] like was that weird to get back into character as her brother?”

Ansel: “I was so excited because last time at the [Divergent] press junket my joke was that that was the only question I got asked, so you’ve kicked off the second press junket and now I’m going to have a fury of that question.”

Reporter with an awkward laugh: “You’re welcome.”

Ansel with sarcasm: “It was definitely really weird, I don’t know how we did it, but we pulled it off somehow. We’re happy that somehow it works.”

Co-star Theo James, who stars as Four, was also a part of the press conference and jumped in on the fun.

Theo: “You wanted a kissing scene [with Tris] at some point.”

Ansel: “Yeah! I asked Theo if it was all right. He wasn’t feeling well and I was like, ‘Listen, I’ve done it before.’ The guys who do the visual effects are good in this movie so they could’ve easily changed our bodies and it would’ve been cool.”

Woodley was on a separate panel, so unfortunately we didn’t get to witness her reaction to all of this.

We’ll have more from the Insurgent junket as well as our thoughts on the film over the next week. The film opens in theaters March 20. While you wait, check out Shailene and Theo as brother and sister in the final trailer:
