Writer and director Alex Garland is back in a big way. The trailer for his new movie ‘Annihilation’ is now online.

After getting a sneak peak at the film yesterday, Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for Alex Garland’s follow-up to Ex Machina.

Based on a novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation tells the story of a group of female scientists who enter an environmental disaster zone in order to recover lost soldiers. Natalie Portman plays a biologist that joins the group as she searches for her missing husband.

Alex Garland made a name for himself in 2015 when Ex Machina landed big with audiences and critics. The sci-fi thriller starring Alicia Vikander, Domhall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac was hailed for its inventive story, strong writing, and special effects. The movie went on to win an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

Annihilation doubles-down on Garland’s love for sci-fi films, this time telling a story on a much larger scale. Unlike Ex Machina that used the sci-fi elements in contained and intimate spaces, Annihilation turns the world into a massive landscape of sci-fi elements.

If the trailer ends up being a good indicator as to the quality of the film, Annihilation will be a formidable follow up to Garland’s Ex Machina. The trailer establishes a tense and thrilling tone with gorgeous visuals.

Natalie Portman leads the film alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.

Annihilation is set to be released in theaters February 23, 2018 by Paramount Pictures. This is a strange release date for a film whose director last movie won an
Academy Award. It’s odd that the studio that would release it so early in 2018 which definitely hurts its chances of any Oscar nominations.
