Anne Hathaway is about to bring one of Roald Dahl’s most notorious characters to life.

According to Deadline, Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway has officially signed on to star in Robert Zemecki’s The Witches.

Hathaway will be playing the role of the grand high witch in the upcoming adaptation, which is based off of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel of the same name.

First published in 1973, The Witches tells the story of a seven-year-old boy who accidentally stumbles upon a witch convention. After discovering their master plan to rid England of all its children, the boy sets out to stop them before it’s too late.

Currently, Hathaway is the only star attached to Zemecki’s adaptation, but rumor has it the production may soon be adding Viola Davis as well.

In addition to helming the project, Zemecki will also be writing the script. The director will also be producing alongside Jack Rapke under their ImageMovers banner.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has taken a crack at The Witches.

The book was previously adapted back in 1990. Spearheaded by director Nicolas Roeg, the film starred Anjelica Huston as the grand high witch.

Though Roeg’s film is considered a loose adaptation of the source material, Zemecki’s plan is to keep his version a bit more true to the book.

There’s currently no word on when The Witches will make its way to the big screen.
