Anne Hathaway may have found her follow-up to Les Miserables, as she is reportedly set to star in a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, penned by Shame writer Abi Morgan.

TheWrap broke the news late last night, writing, “Abi Morgan, who scripted The Iron Lady and Shame, will handle the adaptation, a modern-day retelling of the iconic play set in mid-20th century Italy.”

It’s unclear which role Hathaway has booked in the film, and seeing as there is no director or production start date attached, it doesn’t seem to be confirmed to us. Particularly considering Hathaway’s the frontrunner for the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress, and will likely have all of Hollywood knocking down her door.

Working Title and Universal will produce the film, who previously worked together on Atonement, Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy and most recently, Les Miserables. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner’s first look deal with Universal lasts until 2015, so they’ll have the first chance to distribute the film before it possibly falls to another studio.

Back in 1999, Hollywood produced a modern-day adaptation of Taming of the Shrew in the form of the romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Hathaway’s The Dark Knight Rises co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It appears it’s time for another modern update, although “mid-20th century Italy” isn’t exactly specific.
