The Witches star Anne Hathaway is speaking up and apologizing for the portrayal of disability in the film.

Robert Zemeckis’ highly anticipated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches debuted via HBO Max to much fanfare, but not without some criticism.

Specifically, the film was slammed by non-profit organizations such as Lucky Fin for its decision to portray Anne Hathaway’s Grand High Witch as someone with symbrachydacty (or limb difference) in an effort to make the villainous character seem more terrifying.

Now, Anne Hathaway is speaking out and apologizing for the misstep.

The Academy Award winning actress took to Instagram to issue an apology to those with limb difference who may have been hurt by the character design of The Grand High Witch.

“I have recently learned that many pole with limb differences, especially children, are in pain because of the portrayal of the Grand High Witch in The Witches,” wrote Hathaway. “I do my best to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others not out of some scrambling PC fear, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency we should all be striving for.”

“As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. I am sorry. I did not connect limb difference with the GHW when the look of the character was brought to me; if I had, I assure you this never would have happened.”

In the lengthy, heartfelt apology, Hathaway also stressed that she wanted to specifically apologize to any children, and parents of children with a limb difference for the character depiction and promised to do better now that she knows better.

Anne Hathaway paired her apology with a video from the Lucky Fin Project to spread awareness of the issue.
