Prominent YouTuber Anna Akana has created two fantastic sci-fi short films, titled Miss Earth and Here She Is. Discover them below!

If you don’t know Anna Akana yet, you better familiarise yourself with her work. Not only does she release some fun weekly vlogs, but she’s also producing original web series and short film content.

Hypable has previously selected Anna Akana’s web series Riley Rewind as our featured web series. Akana has since moved on to short films, dedicating 2014 to creating as many as possible.

Lucky for us, the writer/actor/general-life-advice-giver has been crazy productive lately, and her two most recent films have blown us away.

Here She Is is only five minutes long. You might need to watch it twice before you fully understand the story (at least we had to!), but it’s pretty damn clever. And of course the makeup and set decoration is crazy impressive.

Akana plays the lead in this production, and co-directs with writer Megan Rosati:

Miss Earth was released only yesterday. Like Here She Is, this film starts with a futuristic beauty pageant, but moves into a world of bizarre aliens and seamless special effects.

Akana has both written and directed this, and somehow pulls off playing both lead characters, too! It is 13 minutes long, and tells the story of beauty pageant winner Victoria switching places with her sister Arden, and finding herself in an inter-galactic tournament which will determine Earth’s survival. Awesome, right?!

This is a fun, very well put-together film, again providing some stunning visuals. It’s also terrifying, this idea of an alien council holding Hunger Games-style competitions to determine the future of entire planets.

The entire cast is great, both believable in their bizarre roles, and funny as hell.

And in true Akana style we get a great piece of advice, too: “Curiosity, in lieu of blind acceptance, is the true mark of wisdom.” Think about that the next time you find yourself believing everything your TV tells you.
