A 10-episode animated Gremlins series for adults called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is headed to WarnerMedia’s new streaming service.

WarnerMedia has announced a wave of new projects coming to their streaming service. Back in February, it was announced that a Gremlins prequel was headed our way, and we finally have details on the exciting project.

For now, we don’t have any casting updates. However, The Hollywood Reporter states that the Gremlins prequel will be an animated series that is targeted at adult fans. The series will have 10 episodes and will be called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.

The series will be set in Shanghai in the 1920s, and will follow 10-year-old Sam Wing (who will grow up to be the shop owner in the 1984 movie). When Sam meets the young Mogwai named Gizmo, he and a thief named Elle set out on a perilous journey across the Chinese countryside to return Gizmo to his family.

Along the way, the group will be chased by an evil industrialist who is amassing a huge army of evil Gremlins, they’ll uncover a legendary treasure, and they’ll encounter several monsters and creatures from Chinese folklore. It will be a truly exciting adventure that takes deeper into the lore behind the Mogwai while also exploring the fascinating world of Chinese folklore.

Gotham’s Tze Chun is set to serve as writer for the show, while Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Sam Register will executive produce. The trio is also responsible for Hulu’s reboot of the Animaniacs, so they seem like the go-to team right now to help revive old franchises for a modern audience.

Of course, this series is being reported to cater to adults, so the humor will be a bit more adult than what we remember from the original ’80s flick. To help bridge that gap, Chun will be co-executive producing alongside Robot Chicken’s Brendan Hay.

We can’t wait to see what is in store for us in this imaginative prequel to Gremlins. So many of us grew up loving that movie, and it will be truly exciting to head back into that universe.

The WarnerMedia streaming service is set to release its beta in the 4th quarter of this year, so the series is expected to release sometime after that. Until then, we’ll be rewatching Gremlins to get ready for Secrets of the Mogwai.
