Andrew Marlowe, the creator of Castle, is stepping down as showrunner. He will continue to be a presence on the show but will also be developing new projects.

Replacing Marlowe as showrunner, starting with the upcoming season 7, will be David Amann, who joined Castle as an executive producer in Season 3. Castle, starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, is coming off its most watched season, up 3% in total viewers versus season 5, and ranks as ABC’s top drama in DVR viewing among total viewers.

“Over the past four seasons, David has proven himself to be a tremendous leader and a great steward of our show’s unique voice,” Marlowe said in a statement. “I’m excited to continue our creative collaboration as he assumes his new responsibilities.”

Amann has played a pivotal role in crafting several of the best episodes in the last few years, including “Under Fire,” “Disciple” and “In the Belly of the Beast.” Amann is no stranger to TV, as he has worked on Without A Trace, Crossing Jordan and The X-Files.

What does this change-up mean for the future of Castle? Only time will tell if this will help or hurt the show, but given that Castle seems to be in an upswing with viewers, one can only hope that Amann will stick with a formula that has been successful while infusing the show with new ideas.
