The most famous non-Disney animated musical ever, Anastasia, is coming to Broadway later this year!

Once upon a December November, in 1997 to be exact, the animated musical Anastasia found its way into our hearts.

Most remarkable, apart from the fact that the film itself is remarkable, is that Anastasia was not a Disney film, despite the strong similarities to its contemporaries. Directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman it was released by 20th Century Fox, and featured the voice talents of Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Bernadette Peters and Kirsten Dunst.

It told the real-ish-life story of Anastasia, the only surviving member of the Russian Imperial Romanov family, all of whom were executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918 during the Russian Revolution. Despite rumors and imposters assuming her identity, the real Anastasia did not actually survive the massacre. But in this fantastical retelling, she was raised with no knowledge of her true status as the daughter of a Tsar, and finds her way to her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Marie.

And now, this amazing movie will be re-imagined for Broadway, adapted by its original score composers Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Variety reports that the musical, which will debut at the Hartford Stage on May 12, will arrive in New York during the 2016-17 season, at a Shubert Organization theater.

The Broadway musical will feature a mix of new and original songs. Hopefully the reprised numbers will include such favorites as “Once Upon a December,” “At the Beginning,” and the late Aaliyah’s “Journey to the Past.”

The musical is directed by Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Awards for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.
