Former Sony co-chief Amy Pascal has stepped down from the company. This may have unexpected consequences for Spider-Man and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Last year, a hacking group who called themselves the GoP attacked Sony, demanding that the company pull back the controversial comedy The Interview.

One of the repercussions of Sony’s refusal was the publication of private emails to and from the studio, including some unfortunate remarks made by co-chief Amy Pascal.

Therefore, her decision to resign did not come as a massive surprise. Pascal will now be heading a production company backed by Sony.

But, surprisingly, one franchise may drastically change course due to Pascal’s exit.

Sony’s plans for Spider-Man, as made public during the hacking scandal, was to expand the franchise with spinoff villain origin stories and a brand new actor to once again re-invent the character. They had already delayed the first movie until 2018, unsure about how to handle the rise of Marvel and DC Comics.

But since Pascal was the key figure planning out Peter Parker’s future, Variety speculates that this might all change.

Variety even muses if maybe Sony might sell Spider-Man to Marvel after all, which would be great news for Avengers fans bemoaning his absence from the superhero ensemble series.

We are also left to wonder whether producer Scott Rudin will continue his relationship with Sony. Rudin produced The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo for the studio in 2011, and was expected to return for the sequels The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

The leaked Sony emails has left a lot of big-name Hollywood creatives frazzled, including Angelina Jolie and the team behind Men in Black. We’ll have to wait to see what the future holds.
