Another Joss Whedon alum will join the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Amy Acker signs on as a lost love.

Actress Amy Acker has been cast in a highly-anticipated role in an upcoming episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TVGuide.com has announced that Acker will be playing Audrey, a character who, until now, was obliquely known as “the Cellist.”

The character of the Cellist was first referenced as a Portland-based love interest for Agent Coulson in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. Fans have long been wondering whether the character would surface in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the likelihood of which increased as the character was referenced both by Coulson and by Centipede operative Raina.

Acker will appear as Audrey in the April 22 episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Though she now believes Coulson to be dead – a fact which, Raina says, the musician took very hard – her path may collide again with the revived agent as a “super-powered threat from her past” reemerges.

Amy Acker is no stranger to acting out material from the Whedon family. Acker starred as the nervous-but-brilliant Fred Burkle in Angel, and as the secretive Dr. Claire Saunders on Dollhouse. The actress also appeared with Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) in Joss Whedon’s adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing.

Currently a regular on CBS’s Person of Interest, the versatile Acker is a welcome addition to the guest cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Only time will tell, however, whether fans can look forward to seeing the Cellist beyond her upcoming episode.

Meanwhile, guest stars aplenty are scheduled to appear when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 1, episode 16 airs next week. The episode, titled “End of the Beginning,” will feature appearances by Bill Paxton, Saffron Burrows, J. August Richards, Titus Welliver, and more.

The official synopsis for “End of the Beginning” says:

Agents Garrett and Triplett are back to help Coulson’s team track down S.H.I.E.L.D.’S nefarious enemy – the Clairvoyant. But will Deathlok destroy them all to protect his master’s identity?

Let’s hope the answer to that one is, “No.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 1, episode 16, “End of the Beginning,” will air on Tuesday, April 1 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.
