Netflix’s American Son is the story of Kerry Washington as a mom who becomes increasingly worried about her missing teenage son.

Scandal may be over, but we still have plenty of opportunities to see Kerry Washington on the small screen.

Her newest small screen role is in Netflix’s upcoming film, American Son, which is based on the acclaimed Broadway play of the same name. The play was written by Christopher Demos-Brown and directed by Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon — known for his work on Fences and the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

The film not only transfers over the story of American Son from the theater stage to the studio stage, it likewise features all the original cast members as well. Lead Kerry Washington reprises her role from the play, as do Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee. The play finished its Broadway run in January, and immediately began production on the film starting in February.

American Son stars Kerry Washington as Kendra Ellis-Connor, a mother who finds out her teenage son is missing. The story follows her as she struggles to put the pieces together in a South Florida police station. Steven Pasquale plays Washington’s estranged husband, Scott Connor, while Jeremy Jordan and Euguene Lee reprise their roles as two police officers.

According to the official Neflix synopsis of the American Son, the adaptation will present four distinct viewpoints of the story, while also navigating the unique dynamic of an interracial couple trying to raise a mixed-race son.

The actors aren’t the only ones reprising their role from stage to screen. Kenny Leon, who directed the stage version, also directed the film version.

American Son had its world premiere September 12 at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, and will be released for audiences everywhere on Netflix on November 1.
