The first American Pie movie premiered 15 years ago today. Do you feel old yet?

For better or worse, the first American Pie movie changed the teen comedy genre forever when it premiered July 9, 1999.

It was crude, dry and juvenile – and an immediate, smash hit success. It arguably defined what can now best be described as the dude movie, and paved the way for equally uncensored films like The Hangover, Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Let’s take a look back at the movie that started it all, and look at what its stars are doing today.

Warm apple pie – the original recipe

The American Pie franchise has existed for 15 years, with four movies out so far (the latest being American Reunion), and a fifth allegedly planned. But do you remember the one that started it all?

In the original American Pie, four high school seniors pledge to lose their virginities before graduation.

Main character Jim (Jason Biggs) ends up losing it to band camp nerd Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), while Oz (Chris Klein) gets in touch with his sensitive side when he joins the school choir and meets Heather (Mena Suvari).

Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) struggles to keep his longtime girlfriend Vicky (Tara Reid), while Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) ends up finding the perfect partner in none other than Stifler’s (Seann William Scott) mom (Jennifer Coolidge).

While we are now pretty much immune to the movie’s outrageous sexual adventures, when the first American Pie movie hit cinemas, there were a lot of shocked parents who thought they were taking their kids to see a teen comedy.

Instead, they got, well, warm apple pie.

Where are they now?

When we last saw the American Pie team in American Reunion (2012), the characters (and actors) were 10 years older, and facing their high school reunion.

A few years on, the cast are still making names for themselves. Let’s take a look at what the main stars are up to today…

Jason Biggs (Jim)

Initially, Biggs used his American Pie role to land similar gigs in films like My Best Friend’s Girl and L!fe Happens, but Biggs’ main role at the moment is that of Larry on the critically acclaimed Orange is the New Black.

Not only is Biggs lucky to have a role on such a smash hit show, but it is probably also the role that will finally make people see him as something other than “that nerdy kid from American Pie.”

Seann William Scott (Stifler)

Like Biggs, Scott’s roles since AP have mostly been in a similar vein. Think Mr. Woodcock, Evolution, Dukes of Hazzard and Role Models (to name a select few). This also seems to be the tone of his most recent project, Just Before I Go, which is directed by Courteney Cox.

However, the tagline suggests a somewhat more grown up story for Scott: “On the verge of giving up on life, a guy travels to his hometown to make amends.”

Scott also shows a new side of himself in this video diary released by MTV (which also features Jason Biggs):

Alyson Hannigan (Michelle)

The How I Met Your Mother star did not get her breakthrough in American Pie, but it was the movie that proved that Hannigan was much more than the docile, shy character she played on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Since wrapping up HIMYM earlier this year, Hannigan has devoted herself to her husband and daughters. But she’s ready to dive back into TV with More Time With Family (ironically), which is set to premiere in 2015.

Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia)

Following her role in American Pie, Elizabeth recurred on That ’70s Show for a few years, before moving on to do a lot of smaller/TV movies. Last year she guest starred on Melissa & Joey, and this year we’ll see her as Margo in the action movie The Outsider.

Chris Klein (Oz)

Klein recently had a 14-epiode arc on Elijah Wood’s Wilfred as Drew. He’s guest starred on a number of other TV series, including Raising Hope, and later this year we’ll see him as the lead in the WWI movie Out of the Burning Blue.

Mena Suvari (Heather)

Mena Suvari has been busy since American Pie; most recently she had an arc on Chicago Fire as Isabella, and she’s got three movies to be released this year or 2015: the horror film Don’t Blink, the rom-com Opposite Sex, and the filmatisation of the Badge of Honor crime series. There’s definitely diversity there!

Thomas Ian Nicholas (Kevin)

Guess what everybody? Thomas Ian Nicholas is in a band! He’s also got some pretty cool movie projects coming up – notably The Dreamer, a story which covers the early part of Walt Disney’s career. Nicholas plays Walt Disney himself, while Full House actress Jodie Sweetin is playing his aunt Charlotte.

Nicholas also has starring roles in The Lost Tree and Living Among Us, both scheduled for release this year or 2015.

Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch)

Did you know that Thomas voices the character of Barry on American Dad? He’s also got a starring role in the upcoming Things You Shouldn’t Say Past Midnight comedy pilot, and will be appearing in the Karen Gillan rom-com movie The List.

Tara Reid (Vicky)

Reid is mostly sticking with comedy films, acting both in the Hunger Games parody The Hungover Games (playing Effie) and the Sharknado movie. She’s got another one of the latter coming up later this year, and then in 2015 we’ll see her star in a horror/gore movie titled Charlie’s Farm.

Jennifer Coolidge (Stifler’s Mom)

Jennifer Coolidge has had a booming career – and there’s been a lot of intentional typecasting going on. Remember her stint on Friends as Monica and Phoebe’s fake British friend Amanda? She later returned on the Joey show as Joey’s agent Bobbie.

She’s also played Betty on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and most recently recurred as Sophie on 2 Broke Girls.

This year, we can see Coolidge in the movies Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Hell & Back.

Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad)

Eugene Levy is probably the actor most invested in the American Pie franchise, being the star of most of its spinoff movies (including American Pie Presents Band Camp).

Since Reunion, Levy has guest starred on a few episodes of the TV series Package Deal, and will be voicing the character of Charlie in Finding Dory (2016).

Natasha Lyonne (Jessica)

Natasha Lyonne stars opposite Jason Biggs on Orange is the New Black (did you ever make the connection?!), and has a number of interesting projects lined up.

This year she’s got the comedies Bloomin Hot Shuffle and The Quitter, while 2015 will see her in the Miley Cyrus-inspired (not really, we’re just assuming) horror flick so aptly titled #Horror.

What happens next?

Well, apparently American Reunion is not the end of this franchise. Last we heard was the report published a year ago stating that Universal has optioned the writers and director of American Reunion for a fifth movie.

Although some might argue that the franchise is past its prime, Reunion succeeded where the other sequels failed, and managed to recapture the original magic.

Encouraged by this, Universal hopes American Funeral (not the official title, but we could see it happening) will also be able to tug on the sentimentality cords.

The question remains, however, whether the 15 years that have passed since the original American Pie have changed the cinema landscape too much for such a movie. Are we still pleasantly shocked and tickled by such things as the ***** pizza and the webcam sex?

Let us know in the comments! Are you ready to let go of American Pie, or do you want another… er… slice? (We almost couldn’t get ourselves to make that pun, but how could you not?)
