Amid sinking ratings, Fox will reduce the upcoming season of American Idol to just one night a week.

The move follows what other reality shows including ABC’s Dancing with the Stars have moved to in order to tighten up their weekly viewership.

News of American Idol’s episode reduction came from long-time host Ryan Seacrest while he spoke at an event over the weekend.

“We are going to do the performance show and the results in the same show,” Seacrest told the Hollywood Reporter. “So there won’t be a ‘Wait ‘til tomorrow night.’ There won’t be a ‘Coming up, coming up, coming up.’ We are going to put it all into one format in one night. So that will be exciting.”

Since its inception American Idol has aired two episodes a night, with one focusing on the performances that viewers vote on and the second night offering the results (with a couple more performances, of course). As Idol has aged and new reality singing competitions have emerged, the Seacrest-hosted show has slowly fallen in the ratings, leaving Fox to try and figure out what to do with it next.

Reducing the show to one night a week will be American Idol’s best bet at reorganizing their ratings and potentially keeping the show on air for several more years.
