American Horror Story: Freak Show is set to premiere on October 8 on FX. But is the hype and barrage of freaky trailers enough to keep our interest this season?

How much is too much? American Horror Story is still trying to figure that out a week before the premiere. For over a month there have been no less than 21 teaser trailers each showing a glimpse at freak show acts. Though none of them are likely to make an appearance in the actual show, they hint at the twisted madness brewing in the creative offices of the show.

Another release of teaser trailers show a woman with an arm containing two hands, one stretchy woman who appears as if the video editor moved his mouse a little too rapidly, a man playing with a fan in front of his face in slow motion, and a contortionist. In relation to the other videos that have come out of the production room of American Horror Story these are the least impressive. In a way, the shock of American Horror Story is losing its edge. Less, as it is turning out, is much, much more.

The theme for this season comes from veteran of the show Jessica Lange’s obsession with the dark beauty hidden in the freak show world. The story has a solid enough premise with the promise that there are no supernatural forces at work, a ploy that typically causes Murphy’s shows to fall apart mid season. (Ahem, Asylum.)

No matter how many videos and posters come out, the promise of the “scariest clown of all time” as the season’s antagonist still looms on the horizon. If the trailer clowns are any hint at the height Murphy’s terror is willing to extend, viewers should be ready for at least the element of surprise to catch them off guard. As previously reported, the retired clown, Twisty, is not amused with the freak show’s proximity to his dwelling and the clown’s lower portion of his face will be concealed by a mask.

The bill for the fourth chapter of AHS is certainly not lacking in big names or talent. Returning veterans and new comers alike, this is certainly the most impressive assembled cast for any network show. Keeping the stories as real as possible, as the season progresses, American Horror Story will flashback to several of the character’s pasts, including Kathy Bates’ bearded woman, and Lange’s character’s time in the 1930’s German Cabaret scene.

UPDATE: The latest trailer featuring the entire cast and the first appearance of Twisty the Clown has been released.
