American Horror Story: Freak Show returns tonight with chapter 2, “Massacres and Matinees.” Find out who did not survive the night in our full recap!

Lights Out: The town of Jupiter is under lockdown and a missing police detective serves as the final straw in a series of murders sweeping the area. Jimmy’s mind begins to turn as the police pull onto the show grounds seeking an audience with Elsa Mars. Inside her tent, Elsa’s calm washes over the cops. Until they return with a warrant, a close watch will be kept on the place that harbors two, or is it one, runaway patients.

With Elsa’s troupe tucked away in their quarters, the townsfolk and paying customers will remain tucked away in theirs. The police department enforces a curfew that begins at sundown, practically stripping all the business away from Elsa’s show. But it is not the sun that discourages the true killer.

In the opening hours of the Hanley Toy Shop, a tiny robot leaves a trail of blood as it wobbles away from the head of Mr. Hanley, scaring the shop boy right into the knife of the clown hidden in plain sight.

The Strong Men: Jimmy rallies Eve and Paul to help him take care of the final pieces of the missing detective. The body parts are tossed in a pit and set aflame, with plans to scatter the ashes across the grounds. The Darling man cannot rid his conscious of thoughts about the detective’s family and the pain he inadvertently caused them following his rash action.

Meanwhile, there is a new force to be reckoned with in town. The Strong Man and his wife, Desiree Dupree, arrive at their last resort in the trade show circuit. Elsa allows Dell Toledo to plead his case. Closing out their Midwestern engagement after six years, the duo decided that his wife’s assets were not receiving the spotlight they deserved. Three sold out shows a weekend is not something one flees from without good cause. For Dell and Desiree, the cause is Chicago PD out for the man who cracked the neck of a man having sex with his wife. In Desiree’s side business, she served as a “healer” of sorts for the men in the 50s wanting to remain in the closet and have a shot at leading a life with a wife and kids, free from the criminal eye of public.

The smooth talking Elsa Mars gets her Strong Man and Triple-breasted Woman set up with a contract, but for the mediocre fee she is able to pay she gains plenty more than a strong male presence.

A Cure for Boredom: Atop the hill lives a boy. A very, very rich boy. And though the boy is spoiled beyond all reason, he has but one feeling that cannot be satisfied, his boredom. In between bites of escargot and sipping from crystal baby bottles filled with liquor, Dandy Mott lashes out at his mother and flees the grounds.

Nora, the Mott’s maid, approaches Gloria with a concern. Behind the shed a few animal remains are strewn about and tales of a missing cat are circling. That is not the only sign pointing to a disturbing future for Dandy, but it is certainly the most damning evidence that criminal behavior is not far off.

Gloria sees a means to an end in a hitchhiking clown named Twisty. But Dandy sees a way to a full life as a side show act in Elsa’s show. Jimmy takes Dandy under the big tent and tries to explain that the Motts have the world on a string and nothing about living the dream of running away to the circus is going to make his life any better. But Dandy knows better. He knows it is the aching feelings inside of him, the emotions that make him different, not his ability to whip out a rendition of “Anything Goes” by Cole Porter. If the freak show won’t have him, someone else will.

We Proudly Present: The Side Shows Ethel pays Dell a visit and threatens him to stay away from the son he once tried to kill. Down the grounds, Elsa, Desiree, and the rest of the group try to figure out what talents Dot and Bette can offer to the show. As it turns out, the half of the girl with stars in her eyes does not have a song in her heart.

Inside the rehearsal, Dell announces that the solution to their curfew is a matinee. Elsa protests, but the “strong male presence” takes his bills to post downtown. The freaks decide enough is enough and demand to be served in the local restaurant. A quasi sit-in ensues and Dell catches wind of the disturbance. He drags Jimmy outside and beats him on the street as the members of the freak show watch their own side show from inside a place of normal business.

Not only does he advertise the new time slot, but Dell bills Elsa as a special guest appearance alongside Meep. For Elsa, that news is enough to give Jimmy the green light to plant the missing detective’s badge in the strong man’s trailer. As the matinee begins, Elsa watches her spotlight fade and refocus on the new stars Bette and Dot Tattler. The bars of Fiona Apple’s “Criminal” mirror Jimmy’s attempt to stash the badge in Dell’s trailer.

The success of the matinee cannot be denied; Dell is a true showman in every way. He is also one step ahead of the plan to frame him. Dell swiftly stashes the badge under poor unsuspecting Meep’s mattress, the only member of the group who cannot defend himself. The cops show up with warrants and arrest Meep.

Smile: Dandy takes his new friend Twisty for a test drive in the mansion’s play room. When puppets and dolls fail to amuse the clown, Dandy decides to see the entertainment the mysterious man carries around. Whatever he saw inside the bag sparked his interest, but caused Twisty to knock him out and flee to his compound.

Inside the abandoned bus, the kidnapped children decide to make a break for it when Twisty is unaware. Holding a wooden stake, the young girl watches as Twisty offers the boy a toy robot and pulls the shop boy’s head out of his bag. She smacks him with the stake and flees. In the motion of her swing she manages to rip his mask from his face, revealing a sight that is utterly terrifying and nauseating.

The children do not get far from the bus while Twisty quickly reattaches his mask and grabs the boy. A new partner proves his worth by grabbing the girl and taking her back to him. Dandy is motioned into the bus by the clown. The apprenticeship is beginning.

Not Strong Enough: Jimmy understands that the police are out to take the freaks down and use them as a scapegoat for the murders. But taking away Meep breaks his heart. He is supposed to be their protector, their guardian and he let Meep down. He turns to the bottle, a sight his mother flinches at, and laments about his failures.

With half a handle of alcohol in his system, Jimmy decides to head out to the police and defend Meep. But upon leaving the tent he is met with a body bag containing the body with a little fur vest and a high ponytail. Meep did not survive the night in prison and serves as an example for the police to literally toss around should the freaks try something like that again.
