American Horror Story: Asylum creator Ryan Murphy is talking about last night’s finale and explains Jude, Lana, and Kit’s happy endings.

Some fans may have been surprised to find that the final three main characters Jude, Lana, and Kit all got their own happy endings although only one ended in survival. Jude ends up living with Kit as a surrogate grandmother to his two children. After a few months she comes out of the haze of drugs that made her see things and is able to teach them until she becomes ill. The Angel of Death takes her away with a sweet kiss. Kit later remarries but also becomes ill with cancer. Instead of Death, he meets the aliens, who take him away.

Lana finally comes face to face with her son Johnny and is able to reverse the mistake she made years ago. He admits to her that he hurt people and turns the gun on her. Lana talks him down by telling him, “It’s not your fault, baby. It’s mine,” before shooting him with the gun he had brought to end her life. If that doesn’t sound happy to you, she falls in love again and goes on to have a successful career as a reporter.

Ryan Murphy explained to The Hollywood Reporter that although Jude did die shortly after her release from Briarcliff, it was still her version of happiness. Saying, “I think Jude got a great happy ending. I know Jessica felt that.” The same goes for Kit who, although he had to leave his family, got to leave and live forever with the aliens. According to Murphy he got the inspiration for Kit’s ending from the last scene of Close Encounters.

“I wanted it to be that way.”

But sadly, fans will not be getting the alien explanation they were hoping for. Many remain confused and that’s the way he planned it. Instead of explaining them, he said, “I don’t even like to talk about that story because I like that that’s the one thing that everyone can put their own conclusion. Where did they come from? Who were they? … So many people have wildly different ideas of what it was and what it meant. And I wanted it to be that way.”

Although Lana went through the most physical and emotional torture, she ended up being the sole survivor. Murphy always wanted her to end up being the survivor, believing she was the smartest one of his characters this season. He also explained, “I liked that the hero of this season was a heroine. I like that she was a lesbian. I like that she had an arc to her sexuality. I like that she went through a lot of different things. And I like that she got a happy ending. I like that she was in a loving, accepting relationship at the end.” He also revealed that it was always the plan for Lana to go to Briarcliff to become a prisoner and then turn around to shut the place down.

In a final note, he teased fans about the third season, explaining that it would be why it will be lighter: “You’ll see a very different tone in season three, but that’s the joy of the show. As a person right now, I do feel lighter and maybe wanting to embrace something a little bit more fun.”

Are you satisfied with Murphy’s explanations? What else would you like explained?
