With filming finally underway, the cast of American Horror Story season 3 Coven were allowed to discuss their characters and plot lines at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour.

American Horror Story executive producer Tim Minear joined Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett on stage at the TCA’s while they teased about what fans can expected in season 3!

Lange revealed that her character’s name is Fiona and confirms she is one of the witches on the show. “I do play a witch. We move back and forth in time. It encompasses a lot of different stories. I’ve shot two days so far, one day entrances and exits, the other day a scene,” Lange told press at the event.

Lange also said that she doesn’t know much about her character yet. As the actors are only revealed, bits and pieces in the beginning.

Although they were enemies last season, Paulson and Lange play kin this time around. Paulson will portray Fiona’s daughter, Cordelia.

Bates will play a historical character named Madame LaLurie. The character who has been described as Fiona’s frenemy is a Louisiana-born socialite by day and serial killer by night. Madame LaLurie also kept slaves chained in her home.

Bassett plays another historical character named Marie Laveau. Laveau was a voodoo expert who had a large multiracial following. Bassett explains, “She was a woman in 1801 who lives to be 80 years old, who is a very influential person in the city. My character is based loosely on her.”

Bassett also said that she’s been approached by voodoo practitioners offering to help her learn the culture. She’s also found that there’s a large respect for the character she’s playing.

Minear said this season will focus on the oppression of minorities. He explained saying season 3 will explore, “The idea of minority groups going after each other and doing the work of the larger culture for the larger culture.”

There will also be a very strong theme of family, especially of mothers and daughters. In addition, the cast agree’s that these season is much lighter than the previous two.

While Minear agrees, “This year is a drama but there is a lot of humor and…we are embracing a sort of velocity and fun with the series this year.”
