The search for a new American Gods showrunner is over. As previously reported, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are no longer attached to the project.

In an article filled with “sources” hearsay, THR confirms one solid fact — American Gods season 2 officially has a showrunner.

Jesse Alexander, who has worked alongside Fuller in the past, will helm the second season of the Starz hit.

Neil Gaiman, who still remains involved with the development of the series, issued this comment, “I’m thrilled that Jesse is [the] showrunner. He loves and understands the book, he loves and understands the TV series and he’s dedicated to making future seasons of American Gods as good and as beautiful and as unique as they can be.

Shadow’s journey is going to take him, and Mr. Wednesday, and the New Gods and the Old, to some very strange places. I’m glad that we, and the cast and crew, will have Jesse shepherding us on the way.”

With Gaiman on board, can fans finally settle into accepting that this show will come back and be as good as it was before? I, personally, am not there yet. Confidence from Gaiman is a great start, but the fallout from Fuller and Green’s departure still looms over the series.

There is still no clear answer on why Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are no longer connected to their project with Starz. The network exec Chris Albrecht commented at the TCA Winter tour that the duo did not “quit” nor were they “fired.” We may never get an answer beyond the specualtion of “budget cuts” leading them astray.

The lack of clarity, plus Fuller’s recent stint jumping shows and starting more ambitious projects, leaves a bad taste. But I am a champion of American Gods, which before and after this debacle, remains my favorite series of 2017.

Here’s to hoping Alexander can get us to The House on the Rock. When that will happen, however, remains up in the air.

American Gods is set for a second season at Starz. Stay tuned for more updates regarding production, casting, and a return date.
